Mike Stilkey

Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts a melancholic and at times a whimsical cast of characters inhabiting ambiguous spaces and narratives of fantasy and fairy tales. A lingering sense of loss and longing hints at emotional depth and draws the viewer into their introspective thrall with a mixture of capricious poetry, wit, and mystery. His work is reminiscent of Weimar-era German expressionism and his style has been described by some as capturing features of artists ranging from Edward Gorey to Egon Schiele.

Decided to go for a wonder around Greenwich market today and stumbled across this wonderful shop. The following has been taken from the shop’s website.

‘Arty Globe by Hartwig Braun’ is a brand of high-end and very detailed cityscapes, architectural images, maps and other cultural heritage icons, all originally hand-drawn by Hartwig Braun, the artist. A full panoramic city image can take up to several months to create; such is the complexity of the detail required in each illustration.

The ethos behind the business is very much that art is not just for the wall and can be enjoyed by all. The collection on offer has expanded steadily from prints and canvases for the wall to stationery, homeware, clothing, gifts, collectibles and accessories as a way to make the artwork more accessible to a wider audience.
