Helen from Uganda shows how she is trialling solar bottle lights using 1.5 litre plastic water bottles as a way of lighting her dark kitchen in the daytime. She uses the bottles as light bulbs, filled with water and a little bleach, grouped in 3s over her cooking areas in her dark mud kitchen with grass roof. Techniques like solar bottle lights can reduce eye strain and the need for electric lighting where electricity is too expensive or not available.
An animation for Vital Voices, an organisation working globally for women’s independence. This film tells the childhood story of Kakenya Ntaiya, a Masai woman who negotiated herself out of an arranged marriage and convinced her village to collect money for her to study in the USA. She has since returned to the village and built a girls’ school there.
