#WeNeedDiverseBooks
A mission to address the lack of diverse, non-majority narratives in children’s lit.
Alex T Smith’s new picture book is a great example of how those who are championing that vision are changing the status quo. Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion is a playful reinvention of the classic fairy tale, with a young black girl as the central character and a hungry lion. The story is set to the backdrop of a sun-soaked Savannah.
Little Red is on her way to visit her poorly auntie. On the way she encounters all kinds of potentially dangerous wild animals: sleeping crocodiles, great big elephants, tall giraffes, chattering monkeys… and you guessed it, a hungry lion.
Alex T Smith’s illustrations will make your face hurt from excessive grinning, a hilarious story of brains over brawn.
